Hi Nina, sorry to hear about your granddad. He was a great and well respected officer. I was a gunner on the AC47 "Spooky" gunships assigned to the 3rd SOS attached to FLIGHT "D" at Binh Thuy in the southern part of S Vietnam. Your granddad was our Squadron commander when I was there and flew with him several times both at Binh Thuy & Nha Trang Air bases. Your granddad was known to all of us as "COL, DAVE".. we as a group have been looking for him for a long time. We started the Spooky group having reunions 6 years ago. I'm sure you be hearing from a lot of people now that you found us. If you are on FACEBOOK please visit our group site and ask to join,, search: "AC-47 gunship", You and and family are most welcome to join. Next year we are having our reunion at FT Walton Beach, FLA and will be placing a monument, honoring all our lost fallen in VN in front of the AC-47 Gunship on display at the Hurlburt Field Air Park at the front of the base. You are most welcome to come. Please visit us on Facebook, and "stay in touch with us"

Hello everyone, my name is Nina. My grandfather was Lt. Col. Robert A. Davidson. He served on the 3rd SOS Spooky. Sadly he passed away in 2013. I have a bunch of his stuff and with it there is this mug made out of a 105 MM. M14. It is inscribed to him from the crew; Lt. Moon, Lt. Col. Leary, S Sgt. Burchfield, S Sgt. Crumpler, S Sgt. Brymer, and S Sgt. Jordan. I was just wondering if anyone knows how to contact any of these guys? I miss my grandpa like crazy and would love to talk to someone who knew him. Please contact me with any information erniespeaks3@verizon.net. Thank you all so very much!

Just got a call from Al Sproul (during the 2015 Reunion) and he was talking with Don Clifford, who was on the TDY at Udorn that I was on in 1970, C-47 MTT. Don, it was great talking with you about the good ole times at Udorn. Let's stay in touch. Al, thank you so much for giving me a call and letting me talk with Don. We had a great visit. Sorry for missing the reunion, hope to make one soon. Retiring and moving to the lake has been more work than I thought it was going to be. It is great being a part of the SPOOKY World. Hi guys, looking forward to the reunion in San Antonio. Still looking for Sgt Claud Allen, Flight Engineer, 4th SOS, Bihn Thuy and Udorn Thailand 1969. There is a belated Air Medal with his name on it. Contact me for details. CLaud flew with John Lamb, Pilot and on one of their missions in Laos defending a Lima Site were awarded a Medal a few years back. John has been looking for him to give him his medal or his family. John said in an e-mail: Claud may have been from Louisiana. I remember seeing a DD-214 on him that he separated with Baton Rouge as an address? He left Bihn Thuy soon after we came back from Udorn in May of 69. Don't know where his assignment was but it had to be a base of multi-engine transport or aircraft requiring a flight engineer. So if you know of him or and info on finding him or family would be greatly appreciated. Please pass this on to others Bob McGarry: spooky1969@aol.com

Hi Guys, Stunned to find this website tonight but excited to see several old friends names.....Buzz Womack, John Luton, Dennis Harkins, etc. I was at Binh Thuy from January thru October '69. I went to Hawaii on R&R and when I returned, the squadron had closed and everyone was gone. I received orders for Thuy Hoa where I spent my last three months with the 9th SOS. Looking forward to hearing from you. Unfortunately, I can't make this reunion due to other travel plans. Best Regards.

My dad was Capt Barry L Brown who served as an AC47 pilot in Pleiku from Jan - May 1968. His plane and another AC47 went down on May 5th, 1968. I was very fortunate to make contact with Bernie Ducat who was a survivor in the other AC47 that crash landed that night and have learned much about that night from his account. I'm curious if there's anyone else out there who may have some information...Thanks to all of you who served!!

In 1967,after submitting a voluntary request for Vietnam duty, and also flight engineer school,I received orders for flight engineer school on AC-47s.My boss,at Pope AFB,was on the same orders. He got out of it,somehow, and the orders were rescinded.I then received orders for the same position on C-7 Caribous, and proceeded to Nam.I watched you guys work out many times, sometimes over my station at Can Tho airfield in the delta.Wish I could have made some flights with you. When we fired out of the Bou with M16s,we referred to ourselves as "Spooky-Bou".Thanks for serving, guys.

Hi! My dad trained at Randolph in 1966 to fly Spooky. His name is Hai Phat Do and he graduated in the class 66F. His flight instructor was Mulloy. Does anyone have any photos from that graduating class especially with my dad in it? I've been looking for it but cannot locate the photo with Randolph archives. This would mean so much to my dad because he does not have even one photo of himself in his flight suit or his plane. I would love to surprise him with this. We lived in Nha Trang in 1973-1975 also.

Hello AC-47 crews and support personnel. I am a military aviation writer and am working on a book about the AC-47 program. I posted on here once before but have had less luck finding people to talk to than I'd hoped for. I do have a publisher now, U. of Nebraska Press, and am working with a former Spooky pilot on the book, but I'd love to get in touch with as many people as possible. I have a number of successful books out, and you can check some of them out, and my bio, on Amazon by typing my name into a search. Please consider sharing your stories with me. I look forward to hearing from some of you. Sincerely, Rob Morris

I was a propeller repairman at Nha Trang from Feb-Aug 1968. My brother Joseph Shaw Ross, a F-4 pilot, was shot down 01 Aug 1968 and I was with him at Da Nang working on a AC-47 when he was shot down. I went back to the states for a year and went back to Vietnam from Aug 1969-Aug 1970. I was at Nha Trang when we transfered the C-47s and started flying the AC-119s. I was in the move from Nha Trang to Phan Rang. From Jan-Aug 1970 I was with the 17th SOS at Tan Son Nhut. I was lucky to have worked on the three gunships used in Vietnam. The first AC-130As and Blackbirds(C-130s and C-123s) at Nha Trang, the AC-47 and AC-119s at Nha Trang, Phan Rang, and Tan Son Nhut. I live in the Dayton, Ohio area and hope to be at the reunion.

Five crews and three birds were PCS's up to the Udorn's Recce Wing, and few what had been a TDY operation out of the Lou Lueck who, contrary to common knowledge, few the Spook Mission past the 4th's deactivation in Dec 69. Five crews and three birds were PCS's up to the Udorn's Recce Wing, and few what had been a TDY operation out of the 4th. It lasted thru mid 1970 when the mission and aircraft were turned over to the Laotion AF. They Class 26'd the first bird within six weeks. Except for Lou, the only guys I know of are Rocky Crites and Robert A. Manns, both Silver Star winners. Hey guys, another Spooky found, Ron Ryan, was a gunner at Binh Thuy. His e-mail is: delta119@juno.com He sent me the following message Hey Bob: My name is Ron Ryan. I was a gunner on Spooky Gunships and was in your outfit at Bihn Thuy AB, 3rd SOS. I found you online and your name looked familiar but when I saw your picture on the AC 47 home page then I was sure then that we were in the same unit. On the enclosed picture I am second on the right along with some of the others in our unit you may remember. We were really tough outfit back then terrorizing the VC in the Delta. I was sorry we had to deactivate. The Spooky’s had done their mission and time for the 119’s to take over. I was transferred to Nha Trang 4th SOS after the deactivation flew a few missions their and was discharge on Oct 69. While at Nha Trang I was sad to hear about the downing of one of our planes out at Bien Hoa. Capt Pitches and TSG Cavilin who died on that mission I remember from our outfit at Bihn Thuy where two great guys with good spirits. When I visited the Vietnam Memorial at Washington a few years ago I found their names on that wall. I really like the Spooky website. It brings back a lot of memories. I see you have a picture there. I’m glad to see our unit’s picture on the site. I saw myself in the picture on the top row about eight from the left and I remember most of the other guys on the picture. Some of the names on the home page look familiar. I’ll write in and have my name added to the list. I see a Spooky Reunion in Washington is coming soon next month. I’m going try and make it for one or two days, I live in Philly so it’s only a couple hours drive. So Bob have you heard from any of the other guys from our outfit? I haven’t heard from anybody else. I was with the 14 SOW '68-'69, Flight line support, fuel systems maintenance. Had a couple of crews that were close but names are gone to me. I am honored to be a part of this group. I also work with vets in hospice, some Viet Nam grunts, all remember Spooky and all were appreciative of the support we gave them.

Jerry & Bob I have a picture of one of the gunners who went to the 20th that stop in for a short visit back at Bien Hoa. It may be Jerry or E.C. Owens, I’m going to try to post it on this website and to our Facebook page. Take a look and let me know.

Jerry Lechien, this is Bob McGarry, you and I went through gunners school together and were roommates at the hotel at England AFB. Don Gibson was also in our group. I met Don 3 years ago at the second spooky reunion and the last two years. I've been searching for you for a long time but couldn't get a lead. Kept looking in Calf. Don was also looking. It was really weird back then when I went to Binh Thuy in the Delta and later met up with you at Nha Trang when I got stationed there around July/Aug and you were with the 20th SOS. I later went north to Da Nang in Sept and then when the 4th was deactivated in Dec I got sent to the AC-119 Shadow Gunships and sent to Thuy Hoa were we met again. Boy did we get drunk back in those days. Sorry to hear about your health. Please contact me. My e-mail is: spooky1969@aol.com. I will give Don Gibson a call tomorrow and let him know about your message you put on the guest book. I met a bunch of 20th SOS gunners years ago at an Air Commando Reunion and they all new you. They also were looking for you. Do you remember Larry Boynton, the 20th instructor gunner who was from my home State Ma.? They told me that he was living up in VT. Please contact me, we have lots to talk about my friend. It's great to hear from you,,,

I was a Spooky gunner 1969 at Bien Hoa and TDY to Udorn. Upon return to Bien Hoa they asked for volunteers to the 20th SOS as helicopter gunners. E.C. Owens & I volunteered & were transfered to Nha Trang, and later the unit was moved to Tuy Hoa.I checked a long time ago and I was not encluded on any crewman roster. My health is failing and I can't wait longer. You were all a great bunch of guys and I was proud to be with you. By the way I was in the same hooch as John Levitow.

My dad, Mel Remington was a crewman out of Nah Trang , I think 68' - 69'. I think he would really enjoy coming to the reunion. We live south of Pittsburgh PA & I have in laws that live close to Washington DC. As a boy I would love to hear his stories & see all of his pictures. I was in the Army mid to late 90's & my Sargent Major was one mean sob. When he found out my dad flew on Spooky he joined me at the NCO club & told me stories for hours about how many times he was still alive thanks to support from "Puff". Anyways, if you could post some info on this years reunion, date & time, & location I would really appreciate it.
